TOLLAND, CT
The August, 2005 issue of Money magazine lists Tolland as the 29th best place to live in the United State in its top 100 “Best Places to Live” in America. Money’s editor states “we set out to build a list of great American towns from all regions of the country. We wanted to identify places where you would want to raise your family and build your career – places with good schools, safe streets, economic opportunity and plenty of arts and leisure activities.” Originally settled in 1715, Tolland was incorporated as the 49th town in Connecticut in 1722. Tolland is rich in New England tradition and history with its historic Tolland Green and collection of eighteenth and nineteenth century structures such as the Tolland Courthouse, Old Jail Museum, Daniel Benton Homestead and many other Victorian period homes and buildings.
Tolland is proud of its public school system, especially the new high school which opened September, 2006 and a new primary school which opened in 2001. In addition, Tolland maintains extensive parks and recreations areas open to all residents including Crandall Park with its pond, hiking trails, lodge and pavilion facilities. The Tolland Recreation department sponsors numerous activities for all ages such as swimming lessons, golf instruction, athletic programs, summer camps, leisure activities and community sponsored events.
COVENTRY, CT
Historic Coventry is considered the “Gateway to Northeastern Connecticut’s Quiet Corner”. Incorporated in 1712, Coventry is the birthplace of Nathan Hale (open to the public) and is rich with many historic traditions and architecture. Patriots Park on scenic Lake Wangumbaug is popular in the summer for swimming, picnics, watersports, fishing and boating. Coventry also has two public golf courses. The Coventry Recreation department sponsors many activities for town residents including athletic programs, summer camps, swimming lessons, golf lessons, etc. A summer highlight is the annual 4th of July celebration which brings together all residents, young and old.
